The Flock

Sheep

We currently have 19 Icelandic sheep in our flock, including 16 ewes and 3 rams. Six of our ewes - Hattie, Lizzie, Ginger, Freckles, Angie, and Marley - make up the foundation flock, and have been with us since 2007. Pepper, Clover and Tillie were all born in 2008, their sire being CLRC#FFC-M24P. Stefi was born in the spring of 2009, and her sire was CLRC# FFC-358P. Cloud, our ewe from the spring of 2010, was sired by CLRC#FFC-526S. We kept five 2011 ewe lambs: Flash, Silver, Nutmeg, Pearl, and Peanut; but we decided to only breed two of the largest this fall, Silver and Nutmeg. They were both bred by our 2011 ram lamb, Thunder.

Sheep

On a sad note, we lost our favorite ewe from our foundation flock this year, Cookie. She is the mother of our Tillie, from her very first set of twins. Cookie was our most athletic sheep and a champion jumper. Her mother's name was Springer, so no wonder. We would see Cookie jump about 5 feet in the air with all four feet aloft as she cavorted around the pasture. She was also a climber, and her favorite position at the hay feeder was to have both front feet up on the rails so that she could eat the prime stuff off the top. We are fortunate to have 2 daughters of hers in our flock to carry on her great mothering traits. She always produced big, healthy lambs who grew rapidly on her ample milk supply. We hope she is happy in pasture heaven. Miss you, Cookie.
